Types of Bases in Alchemy

One of the options we have to create our liquids, are the mixture of the base adding an aroma,the one we want to create an exact proportion of the liquid itself. In this post I will tell you what types of bases exist for its use and to make the mixtures in your favorite liquids.

We start with the terms, in this case the compounds of our neutral bases, the PG the VG and the PDO

• PG: Propylene glycol (systematic name: propane-1,2-diol) is a colorless, tasteless, odorless organic compound (an alcohol, more precisely a diol). Used in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, flavoring and moisturizer.
• VG: Vegetable glycerin, or liquid glycerin is also known as glycerol. It is extracted from some vegetable oils, such as coconut or palm, by a process known as hydrolysis. It is a colorless, odorless liquid with a sweet taste and is soluble in both water and alcohol. Used again in cosmetic products, pharmacy, etc...
• PDO: It is the perfect natural and biodegradable alternative to glycols from petroleum. Benefits: It is used in cosmetics as a moisturizing agent, emollient and solvent. Its sensory properties on the skin are excellent and reduce irritations. It also acts as a viscosity controlling agent. In this case, it is used in fast maceration bases, since the compound accelerates the maceration process of the particular aroma, whatever its ingredients.

TYPES OF BASES

• PG and VG separated: as we read, these bases will be used separately to arrive at exact proportion and to our liking, either 50/50, 70/30, 60/40 etc ...
• PG and VG together (packs): here we have everything together, the most comfortable. We find base packs in which we will have the PG and the VG together in a neutral mixture, with the necessary nicotine canisters for 1.5mg, 3mg or 6mg. We will also have the basic proportions: 50/50, 70/30, etc...
• PDO and VG (Quick Bases):as we have already mentioned above, these are the fast bases, with PDO instead of PG so that they accelerate the maceration of the liquid in particular and we have an aroma in less time, but it must also be said, with different body and flavor, below I explain why in my conclusions.

Next I will detail which bases should be used for different aromas (in my opinion and experience, it does not have to be so):

- 70VG/30PG: the most demanded, for my taste, I would use it more in sweet liquids,since we prefer that the liquid becomes more denso and sweeter, as you will have already read, glycerin is very sweet and we will need it for this type of liquids since it favors its flavor.

- 50VG/50PG: the one in the middle of neither, just half of each component. I would use it more in tobacco and organic aromas, which are so fashionable. We want the PG to do its function and make the e-liquid less bulky and thus drain us better in our tank and be able to taste 100% our tabaquil liquid.

- 80VG/20PG, 60PG/40VG, 60VG/40PG: and here the other concentrations that already depends on our taste...

My conclusions and personal opinion:

As I have already been commenting in the post, I would use the bases 80VG / 20PG and 70VG / 30PG especially in liquids with sweet ingredient, whether they are tobacco, fruit, or desserts, but that carry a sweetness that characterizes them, more than anything to favor them. And 50VG/50PG for the driest and most processed tobaccos.

As for type of base I opt for the traditional ones of a lifetime, not the fast maceration, it is not for anything in particular, I just like more the flavor that these bases can give me and not the fast ones, I guess I'm used to waiting for the liquids to macerate :D

And finally as I know that not everyone knows, the maceration times will depend on each aroma, but it would usually be:

- 3-5 days: fruity aromas, with or without freshness.

- 7-10 days: sweet, creamy aromas.

- 15-30 days onwards: tobacco aromas, RY4 style.
